Plot summary
Ava Boone is a television actress living in Los Angeles with her boyfriend, Kelly Rhodes, a photojournalist. When a deadly influenza pandemic shuts down air travel, Kelly charters a private plane to take them to Delmont, South Dakota, the rural town they left years earlier, but he stays behind to document the crisis. Kelly's brother Max collects Ava at the airport, unhappy that she came without him, and a military checkpoint now admits only residents. Ava works on the Rhodes family farm with Max and his diabetic mother, Betsy, whose insulin is running low. The family keeps its own water, food, generator and solar panels. At a local bar, a man named Bob tries to recruit Max for a militia, and Ava's father, Jasper Boone, demands she come home.
