Plot summary

Mona Hibbard comes from a troubled home and has one ambition: to be crowned Miss American Miss, a title that women with children cannot hold. Her mother drinks, mocks her daughter's early pageant losses, and then refuses to fund any further competitions. Ruby Stilwell, Mona's best friend, and Ruby's grandmother support her instead as she works her way up the pageant circuit. When Mona becomes pregnant, Ruby takes the baby, Vanessa, and brings her up as her own daughter so that Mona keeps her eligibility. Mona turns colder as the crown comes closer. She sabotages a fellow contestant during her routine and leaves Vanessa in Ruby's care, ignoring how much the girl resembles her.
