Plot summary
U.S. Marines come ashore on Choiseul Island in October 1943, a diversion while the Allies prepare to attack Japanese-held Bougainville. Four men from the battalion are picked for a reconnaissance patrol. Their task is to reach a French planter named Bouchard, who sent a single radio message naming an area the Japanese have mined; the patrol must establish that the message is real and that Bouchard is still alive, since he can supply information the landing needs. If it proves true, the information could save about 18 percent of the Marine invasion force. Afterward the party is to meet a U.S. Navy PT boat on the coast. Burke, Sgt. Fletcher and the others with them are the only survivors of Fletcher's platoon on Guadalcanal, and both the patrol and Fletcher himself blame his leadership for the losses there.

The U.S. Marine Corps refused to help make Beachhead because the screenplay killed off two of its four Marines; its Public Information Officer said the Corps would not back any film showing 50 per cent casualties during a recruiting campaign for a less danger-seeking image. The producers went to the Pentagon and got Navy, Coast Guard and Hawaiian National Guard help instead.
