Barefoot Gen 2 (1986) on Netflix

Plot summary

In 1948, Hiroshima is still rebuilding. Gen Nakaoka lives with his adopted brother Ryuta and their mother Kimie, who takes a job at a geta factory while the boys collect food and scrap metal to sell on the black market. The brothers attend school in a ruined building, where a hostile first encounter brings them to Masa, the leader of a gang of orphaned children who survive by pickpocketing in the market. Policemen try to place the brothers in an orphanage, and the gang hides them. Gen befriends Katsuko, who was badly burned in the bombing, and the orphans take in Suekichi, a retired journalist whose family died in the blast. Gen rallies the children to build a new home from wood and materials taken from abandoned buildings.
