Plot summary
A thousand years after the Seven Days of Fire, the war that ended civilization and left the land poisoned, the Valley of the Wind holds out beside a vast Toxic Jungle of giant mutant insects. Princess Nausicaä, the Valley's sixteen-year-old heir, studies the jungle and its creatures, among them the armored Ohm, and wants humans and the forest to live side by side. A Tolmekian cargo plane crashes in the Valley, carrying a Giant Warrior embryo, the kind of bioweapon that brought the old war. Princess Lastelle of Pejite, the crash's lone survivor, begs Nausicaä to get rid of the cargo. Tolmekian troops under Princess Kushana then seize the Valley, and Kushana intends to grow the embryo and burn the jungle with it.

- In 2004 a Japanese-led project began building a real-life, working personal jet glider based on the glider from the film; a jet-powered version, registration number JX0122, took off under its own power for the first time on 3 September 2013.
- A version of the film cut by about 22 minutes from the 117-minute Japanese original for a faster pace left its voice actors uncredited and renamed the title character Princess Zandra.
- Hideaki Anno, a founding member of Gainax, was assigned the film's challenging Giant Warrior attack sequence, and considers his later series Neon Genesis Evangelion a continuation of Nausicaä done in his own way.
- Miyazaki initially refused to adapt the manga into a film because he had a deal with Tokuma never to do so, agreeing only on the condition that he could direct.
- The film was made on a production schedule of only nine months and with a budget equivalent to $1 million, with animators paid by the frame.
