Plot summary
Jill Rosen's family is upper-middle-class and Jewish, and she has been successful in the acting productions at her high school in Trenton, New Jersey. In 1966 she meets the Sheik, a blue collar Italian student there who wants to follow Frank Sinatra's path. He pursues her, and although Jill turns aside his sexual advances, the two begin a relationship. The Sheik spends a night with Jody, a friend of Jill's who is sexually active, and is then expelled from school. Jill plans to attend Sarah Lawrence College in New York, and in the fall of 1967 she leaves Trenton for her first year there.
