Plot summary
Jessica has come to Paris from Mâcon, drawn by her grandmother Madame Roux's talk of a luxurious world. She spends a night without shelter before the Bar des Théâtres takes her on as a waitress, the first woman the café has employed, hired because the owner expects crowds. The café sits among the concert halls and theaters of Avenue Montaigne, and Claudie, who works backstage nearby, helps her settle in. Regulars include Catherine, an actress known for a television soap opera who wants more rewarding parts; Jean-François, a celebrated pianist tired of formal recitals who wants to play for children and the ill, which unsettles his wife and manager Valentine; and Jacques, an art collector selling his collection, whose son Frédéric disapproves of his much younger girlfriend Valérie.

- The character of pianist Jean-François Lefort was built on the real pianist François-René Duchâble, the film's classical music technical advisor, who performs its solo piano works; the character's dislike of the classical world's stresses and formality and wish to play for children and the ill came from Duchâble's own public statements.
- The film is dedicated to Suzanne Flon, the actress who played Madame Roux in the cast; she died after the film was completed.
