Plot summary

Rumor holds that Atari dumped unsold E.T. cartridges in a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico. A documentary team sets out to excavate the site. The work takes months of preparation, and the dig is carried out on April 26, 2014. The local authority allows it to last one day and orders the landfill closed by April 27. Digging was planned to reach eighteen feet but goes to thirty. About 1,300 of the estimated 700,000 buried games are unearthed during roughly three hours of work. The Alamogordo City Commission intends to offer seven hundred of those cartridges for sale, five hundred go to the Smithsonian Institution and New Mexico museums, and mayor Susie Galea hopes the site becomes a tourist attraction.
