Plot summary

Edith Martin, a free-spirited businesswoman, arrives at Middleton College with her high-achieving eighteen-year-old daughter Audrey for an admissions tour. George Hartman, a heart surgeon, is on the same tour with his unmotivated son Conrad. The two parents wander off and then struggle to rejoin the group, and when they catch up in the library they embarrass their children. Audrey accuses Edith of opposing her wish to attend Middleton. Edith answers with a lie, telling her daughter that she and George are leaving for a private tour with the Dean. Audrey and Conrad stay with the student guide Justin, while Edith and George borrow bicycles and spend the day on campus, climbing the bell tower and sitting in on an acting class, both of them married and unsure what the hours together mean.
