Plot summary
In southern France, Vincent van Gogh works at a furious pace, walking the countryside around Arles and setting down what he sees in thick strokes of paint and rapid drawings. He cares about what the act of painting means to him rather than about selling canvases, and since buyers stay away, his brother Theo van Gogh supports him with money and encouragement from Paris. Indoors he works in a yellow room of a yellow house, and he fills a large sketchbook that Madame Ginoux gives him, thinking about flowers that wilt and the painted versions of them that do not. The local teacher and her schoolchildren jeer at his work, and some townsmen turn on him on his way home. His brother arranges for the painter Paul Gauguin to come and stay.

Naifeh and Smith developed an alternative hypothesis in which van Gogh did not commit suicide but was a possible victim of accidental manslaughter: the bullet entered his abdomen at an oblique angle, and he had gone drinking with the boys who may have shot him, one of whom habitually wore a cowboy suit.- Dafoe was 62 at the time of filming, which made him 25 years older than van Gogh was when he died.
