Plot summary
In Milan, Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo work at jobs far below their ambitions. Aldo appears as the phantom in operas, Giacomo dubs films in which he only makes noises, and Giovanni poses as a living mannequin in a department store. The three of them dream of staging their own adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac, and Marina joins the company, though putting the show together proves complicated. Three years later, Giacomo meets up with Giovanni again, and the two men agree to travel together to Sicily, where their third friend, Aldo, is dying. The story of their years together returns in flashbacks.
