Plot summary

In 1813, with the Napoleonic war behind them, two soldiers, Jakob and Veith, are walking home. Their route brings them to Pahlbach, a village high in the mountains, and the people there greet the pair with suspicion. The reason becomes clear before the first night is over. Creatures of unusual violence and cunning are active in the woods surrounding Pahlbach, and they lure the two men out among the trees. There the beasts make a silent demand: they want the bodies of the village's women so that their kind can continue. Jakob rejects it outright and calls for a fight. Veith is not so sure, finding the enemy too strong, and thinks an accommodation might be possible. The demand was not made to them alone; others in Pahlbach have received it too, and the village is taking sides.
