Plot summary
Three men in a town near Neyveli are expecting children at the same time, and each has a different notion of how to raise one. Dhayalan's wife gives birth at home, while Singaperumal fixes a date and time and has the doctor perform a cesarean so his son's horoscope, calculated beforehand, comes out well. The three boys are named Vetriswaran, Chakravarthy and Mayilvaganam. Dhayalan will not send his son to a playschool at the age of two, arguing that a small child should play and begin school at five. As the boys grow, Dhayalan teaches trust and friendliness, Singaperumal tells his son to trust nobody and to chase the top marks in Class 10 and 12, and Nadunilayan preaches a low-profile middle position. Dhayalan moves Vetriswaran from a private school to a government school in second grade.

- Samuthirakani said the plot of Appa was drawn from a real-life incident that happened when he was choosing a school for his son, and that the film, a spiritual sequel to Saattai (2012), would revolve around the education system like its predecessor.
- Appa came about because Samuthirakani postponed his film Kitna in September 2015 after its lead actress Dhansika was offered a role in Pa. Ranjith's Kabali (2016); he used the time to make a spin-off to his earlier film Saattai (2012).
- Appa was remade in Malayalam as Aakashamittayee with Jayaram in the lead, and Samuthirakani directed the remake himself, which marked his debut as a director in the Malayalam film industry.
