Plot summary
Kelsa, a trans girl, is a high school senior. Her closest friends are Chris and Em, and she posts YouTube videos about her life without telling her mother. Khal, a classmate, gives relationship advice to strangers on Reddit and spends time with his best friend Otis. He has not told his parents he would rather learn a trade than go to a four-year college. In art class the two are partnered to paint portraits, and a mutual attraction develops. Em tells Kelsa she has a crush on Khal and asks her to pass him a flirtatious note at lunch. Kelsa messages Khal on Instagram to say the note came from Em, and they begin talking often. Khal wants to admit his feelings but fears the social stigma, especially since Otis makes jokes about gay and trans people.
