Plot summary
In Tiruchirappalli, Annapoorani comes from a Hindu Brahmin family that has served the Srirangam temple for generations, her father cooking the prasadam offered to devotees. The household eats only vegetarian food, and her father will not allow her in a room where meat is served or cooked. She wants to study hotel management and become, like her idol Anand Sundarajan, a corporate chef, so she joins that course at the university where her parents believe she is taking an MBA. Her father catches her eating chicken and forces a matrimonial alliance on her. On the day of the wedding, she leaves for Chennai with her friend Farhaan and a voice note for her family.

- After its Netflix release, Annapoorani drew an FIR from activist Ramesh Solanki and the Hindutva organisation Vishva Hindu Parishad, who accused the film and the streamer of promoting love jihad and hurting Brahmin feelings; the complaint also said the film inaccurately called the deity Rama a meat-eater. Netflix then removed the film worldwide.
- Director Nilesh Krishnaa said he pitched the film to Nayanthara by narrating the script over a phone call during the COVID-19 pandemic, and that he had written the script with her in mind.
