Plot summary

Andrey Simonovich Filipov once conducted the Bolshoi orchestra, until defending Jewish musicians cost him the podium and left him as the theater's janitor. While tidying his boss's office he finds an invitation from the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, addressed to the Bolshoi. He hides it and shows it to his friend, the cellist Aleksandr 'Sasha' Abramovich Grosman, then sets out to round up the players he once led, now reduced to working as taxi drivers and movers, so they can perform in Paris in the orchestra's place. Ivan Gavrilov, a former KGB agent, is enrolled as the orchestra's manager. Filipov wants Anne-Marie Jacquet as soloist, a virtuoso who has never played the Tchaikovsky concerto. Her agent and adoptive mother, Guylène de La Rivière, is reluctant.
