Plot summary
Paris in the 1920s. Marguerite Dumont, a wealthy baroness, has a passion for music and the opera and performs for a circle of guests. Her singing is badly out of tune and nobody has told her; her husband Georges and her close friends have encouraged the illusion. Her neighbors enjoy her lavish hospitality, while avant-garde poets and performance artists turn her renditions to their own purposes. Her butler, Madelbos, photographs her in operatic costume, and he blackmails the washed-up tenor Atos Pezzini into becoming her voice coach. Pezzini installs his retinue in the house and puts her through strange exercises. She is helping raise money for war orphans, and she intends to sing before a genuine public at the Opera.
