Plot summary
Jenny Mellor is a bright sixteen-year-old schoolgirl in 1961 London who hopes to attend Oxford, and her strict father Jack keeps a close watch on her studies. Waiting at a bus stop in heavy rain after youth orchestra rehearsal, she accepts a ride from David Goldman, an older man who says he loves music and worries about her cello getting wet. He sends her flowers before her orchestra's concert, and later invites her to a concert and supper with his friends Danny and Helen. Jack disapproves at first, but David talks him into letting Jenny go and bringing her home later than her usual curfew. The evening brings dinner at a restaurant with live music, and an invitation to an art auction.

- Nick Hornby's screenplay for An Education was based on an autobiographical essay by the British journalist Lynn Barber about her schoolgirl affair with the conman Simon Prewalski, whom she called Simon Goldman; it ran in the literary magazine Granta in 2003.
- Orlando Bloom was originally cast in the role of Danny, the friend of Peter Sarsgaard's character David, but he dropped out of An Education before shooting began.
- The concert hall shown in An Education, St John's, Smith Square, would still have been a wartime ruin at the time the film is set, 1961; it was restored and opened as a concert hall in October 1969.
