Plot summary
In 1900, in the rice-growing barrio of San Isidro on Luzon, Simón commands the guerrilla band that has taken the Spanish guardia civil outpost, and he has tasked his brother Rafael, the barrio's kapitan, with holding the guardia captain and the friar Padre Hidalgo prisoner for the First Philippine Republic. American troops pursuing General Emilio Aguinaldo reach San Isidro, the two Spaniards are freed, and a garrison under Lieutenant Ike Compton stays to protect the village. The Americans want Rafael's help in hunting the guerrillas, while Simón holds that anyone cooperating with the Americans is a traitor, leaving Rafael caught between the two sides.
