Plot summary
Nathan Zuckerman attends a high school reunion in Newark, where his old friend Jerry Levov tells him that Jerry's brother, Seymour "Swede" Levov, has died after a long illness. The story turns back to Swede as a young man, winning his father Lou's consent to marry Dawn Dwyer, a former beauty queen and a Catholic. They settle on a farm in Old Rimrock, New Jersey, where Dawn keeps cows and Swede commutes to the Newark glove factory. Their daughter, Meredith, called Merry, has a severe stutter and is sent to a speech therapist. By high school Merry has grown radical over the Vietnam War, spends her Saturdays in New York City with friends her parents distrust, and joins antiwar protests.
