Plot summary
The Leininger family leaves Germany in the mid-18th century and farms at Penns Creek, Pennsylvania, beside the LeRoy and Hecklinger families. General Braddock dismisses six Indian chiefs as possible allies, against George Washington's advice, and they side with the French instead. In 1755, Galasko and Hannawoa, whose father is a Delaware chief, burn the Leininger farm while Mrs. Leininger and John are away at the mill. Barbara and Regina hide in a cave, but the warriors take them and gather them with other captured children, among them their friend Marie LeRoy. When the Indians depart, they divide the captives and Galasko dubs Barbara Susquehanna, separating Regina from Barbara and Marie.

- The title song "Alone yet Not Alone," written by Bruce Broughton and Dennis Spiegel and performed by Joni Eareckson Tada, was nominated for Best Original Song at the 86th Academy Awards, but the Academy rescinded the nomination on January 29, 2014, after finding Broughton had improperly contacted other members of its music branch.
- The Academy had rescinded nominations before, but pulling this one was the first time it cited ethical grounds for doing so and the first time it did so on a scripted American-produced feature film.
