Plot summary
Conrad, Hunter and Tim are close friends in a small town. Grace Turner takes a liking to Conrad, and the two begin spending time together, which strains his friendships. Conrad had promised Hunter and Tim the Fourth of July, so he turns down an invitation to watch fireworks with Grace's family. That night the three drive around town taking garden ornaments from porches. On a dare, Conrad walks up to Grace's house and takes a plant. Grace's brother Eric is home after a quarrel with her, and he chases the boys to the edge of town. A deer wanders into the road; Eric strikes it and his car leaves the road into a tree. He is still breathing, and Hunter and Tim want to drive on, hoping someone will pass by. Conrad, under pressure, goes with them.
