Plot summary
A Texas bay town's fishing trade is being entered by Vietnamese immigrants, and their arrival unsettles the local fishermen. Among them is a despondent Vietnam veteran whose livelihood is in danger, and the newcomers push him toward the edge. He joins other fishermen and the KKK in a campaign of violence and intimidation against the Vietnamese crews. The story draws on true events in Texas in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

- Louis Malle first learned of the real violent clashes between Vietnamese refugees and Texas fishermen from accounts in The New York Times, and the reporter who wrote the article that caught his attention, Ross Milloy, supplied the film's narrative basis and was given an executive producer credit.
- Louis Malle traveled to Texas with writer Alice Arlen to research the film, and was so impressed by her first draft that he personally financed pre-production, prepared to fund the entire picture himself before TriStar Pictures provided the $5 million budget.
- Alamo Bay was filmed on location in Rockport-Fulton Beach, Texas, the very place where the real violent incidents between the fishermen and the refugees had occurred.
