Plot summary
Elmer Jackson works as a carpenter in a small Californian town during the 1930s. When his wife dies, he is left to bring up four young boys on his own. The government then cites trumped-up charges of parental neglect and puts the boys in various foster homes and institutions. Elmer does not know what the boys will be subjected to in those places. The conditions the court imposes and the hard years of the Depression make his search for his sons very difficult.
