Plot summary
Melinda Moore meets Robert, an engineering student, in college, and a mixup of papers brings him to her dorm room that same day. The two become a couple, and when she finds him with Diana Wells she drives her car into his RV; the crash leaves her unable to have children. She and Robert marry anyway, against the wishes of her sisters June and Brenda. Melinda works to keep them afloat for eighteen years while Robert chases his idea, a self-charging battery. She mortgages their house to fund a prototype of the design, and he hopes the venture capitalist Prescott will take an interest.
