Plot summary
Nearly twenty years after the events of Dracula, Dr. Abraham Van Helsing lives in the California Central Valley with his wife Mina and their sons Max and Rudy. The boys have been raised on stories of creatures that hunt at night and on the family's repeated moves to ever more remote places. Abraham asks Max, the older son, whether he is ready to join the fight against the darkness, and sets him to watch over Mina, whose mind he says is linked to the vampires and grows more unsettled when they are close. Surveyors for the Pacific Railroad come to the valley plotting a new route, and an accident brings two of them, Eddie and Elsie, to Abraham for medical help. Mina's behavior turns stranger and more assured.
