Plot summary

Hattie works in the diner her father Perry runs and will not consider a relationship with Sergio, an assistant at the pastry shop who is smitten with her, until he earns a decent living. Sergio's employer, Mr. Linzer, offers him $20,000 to burn the store down so that he can collect the insurance money and give his wife the life he thinks she deserves. Sergio turns him down, and the bakery burns down anyway. Sergio is then offered $25,000 to accept the blame for the fire.
