Plot summary
Steven Taylor is a hugely successful player in New York finance, and he treats his wife Emily as a prized acquisition. Emily works at the United Nations and is involved with David Shaw, a struggling artist who answers her emotional needs, and she considers leaving Steven for him. Steven learns of the affair and turns up at David's studio with what he has found out: David's real name is Winston Lagrange, and he served time for swindling wealthy women. Rather than expose him, Steven offers $500,000 for Emily's death and pays $100,000 up front, money he expects to inherit from her trust fund.

SPOILER
The Blu-ray release includes an alternate ending in which Steven confronts Emily in the kitchen rather than the foyer; after she shoots him, he warns "You won't get away with this" before dying, while she deliberately injures herself to make it look like self-defense.- In homage to Dial M for Murder, where Grace Kelly greets Ray Milland with "There you are!" and a kiss when he comes home, Michael Douglas's character greets Gwyneth Paltrow exactly the same way early in A Perfect Murder.
- The title A Perfect Murder matches the translations used for Hitchcock's film in other countries: it was known in Italian as Il delitto perfetto, in Spanish as Crimen perfecto and in French as Le crime était presque parfait.
- Throughout the film Gwyneth Paltrow's character Emily carries an Hermès Kelly bag, the model of purse named after Grace Kelly, who was often photographed carrying one.
