Bobby Whiteside lives in a town on a lake that freezes in winter, with his mother Sarah, older brother Jeremy and younger sister Roxie. His father Cole left the family at Christmas nine years ago, and Bobby's best friend Charlie was lost on Christmas Eve. Bobby quit the school hockey team.
