Plot summary

At the start of the 20th century, the swordmaster Pride accepts Hero Hua as his second pupil and teaches him the sword. Hero kills the foreigners responsible for murdering his parents, passes a night with Jade, his lover, and the next morning boards a ship for the United States. On the crossing he meets Luohan, and in America he works as a servant and a laborer in Steel Bull Canyon, where he rebels against the harsh treatment of the workers. Jade follows him to New York City, and the two build a family there. Years later, Sheng, Hero's friend since childhood, and Hero's son Sword reach New York's Chinatown, where Luohan recounts meeting Hero on the ship.
