Plot summary
Bobby Morrow grows up in suburban Cleveland, where his older brother, his mother and then his father die while he is still a boy. As a teenager he meets Jonathan Glover, a gawky, conservative classmate who is coming to terms with being gay, and he becomes a regular at the Glover house, where he shares marijuana and the music of Laura Nyro with Jonathan and Jonathan's mother Alice. Alice teaches him to bake, a skill that carries him to New York City in 1982, where Jonathan lives in an East Village apartment with Clare. Bobby moves in with them, and the three set up a household of their own making.
