Plot summary
On the way to the airport, Brian Robeson and his mother stop at a sporting goods store, and she buys him a package there. At the terminal he opens it and finds a hatchet inside. He boards a single-engine plane with Jake Holcomb, the pilot, and the two exchange a few words. Holcomb lets the thirteen-year-old fly the aircraft, which Brian enjoys. Then Holcomb suffers a major heart attack, and the plane goes down in the Yukon wilderness. No one reports the crash. Brian is left alone in the harsh country with the hatchet, and he must find food and shelter, guard against wild animals, and deal with his parents' divorce.
