Carter Spencer is a successful, mostly content adult whose parents, Hugh and Melissa, are 15 years into a divorce and have not spoken to each other in 20. Their fights, their new partners and their failed relationships have followed Carter and his younger brother Trey the whole way. Carter has a long-term girlfriend, Lauren. Then Trey proposes to Keiko after four months together and asks Carter to get their feuding parents to cooperate for the wedding. Carter goes back to a counselor he saw as a teenager, hoping to make sense of the request. Melissa cuts Hugh down whenever they meet, and Hugh stays cold and distant from his sons.
