Plot summary
Holly Grant is a social worker who long ago stopped expecting Santa Claus to leave a boyfriend in her stocking. In court she helps a mother try to regain custody of her children, but the lawyer, Ryan Hughes, never appears, and Holly dictates an angry letter to him. Her friend Diane promises her a grand Christmas present. On Christmas Day a man carrying a tree knocks at her door with a note naming him as her gift, and he gives his name as Douglas Firwood. Holly takes him for Diane's gag and invites him in. That afternoon she brings him to her parents' house for dinner and tells her matchmaking family, her sister-in-law Carol among them, that Douglas is her longtime boyfriend. Douglas plays along.
