Plot summary
Planet Rock is the record that turned the Roland TR-808 into a modern instrument, and the film traces the drum machine from that point through hip hop and modern dance music, where records were built on its sound, and into the present, where artists keep returning to it. The film tells the history of the drum machine and the culture that grew up around it, drawing on musicians, DJs and producers from hip hop, dance and pop. Production began after a discussion about 808 classics in London in late 2011 and continued at the Winter Music Conference in March 2012.
