Plot summary

In the early days of the Korean War, the South Korean army gathers along the Nakdong River to hold the line while it waits for United Nations troops. The city of Pohang is left with a single unit of 71 student volunteers, undertrained and short of weapons. Oh Jang-beom, a student who survived a battle at Yeongdeok, is ordered by Captain Kang to lead them. Three young criminals under Ku Kap-jo join the unit, and Kap-jo challenges Jang-beom's authority and wrecks the students' food supply. Ordered to hold the P'ohang girls' middle school, a strategic point on the river perimeter, the students face the approaching 766th Unit.
