Plot summary
In Vienna, between October and December 1993, a handful of lives unfold in fragments separated by black pauses. Marian Radu, a Romanian boy, crosses the border at night through a swamp and hides in a truck, then lives as a beggar on the city's streets. A security worker collects money from a bank, argues with his wife and says long prayers at home. Another young man takes guns from a military armory. A college student bets with his friends. A retired man watches television and talks to a daughter too busy to visit him. A childless couple hopes to adopt a girl. Between the fragments, newscasts report on the Bosnian War and other conflicts.
