Plot summary

In Budapest in the late 1930s, László Szabó runs a restaurant where Ilona Várnai waits tables and shares his life. He takes on a young pianist, András Aradi, and András and Ilona fall in love, while she stays with László and the two men keep working side by side. For Ilona's birthday András writes the song Gloomy Sunday. That same night the German businessman Hans Wieck, who shares her birthday, photographs Ilona and asks her to marry him.
