Plot summary
Dan Mercer interns at the Austin record label Topo Records, and Melanie Clark, his girlfriend of six years, has just started assisting Ms. Anders in an elementary school classroom. The two are college students whose relationship has joyful moments, and it is beginning to fray. After a house party, Mel drives to Dan's house drunk. He calls her reckless and tries to make her stay the night, and she pushes him into a dresser, cutting his head. At the emergency room Dan invents a story about the wound to cover for her. At the label, his coworker Amanda notices the injury and tells him the situation would look different if Mel had been the one hurt.

- Hannah Fidell wrote only a 40-page treatment for 6 Years, with visuals and tonal references, instead of a full script, so only a few prominent scenes had written dialogue and much of the film was improvised.
- Actor Will Brittain was originally attached to portray the role of Will in 6 Years, but he had to drop out at the last minute.
- The film began because Mark Duplass approached writer-director Hannah Fidell to make a film depicting a young couple experiencing domestic violence, an idea that appealed to her.
- Taissa Farmiga said the cast and crew lived together for the whole production in the house used as Mel's home, so they would become comfortable with each other because of the film's intimate nature.
- The soundtrack went unreleased, though Joshua Leonard, Ben Rosenfield and Jason Newman recorded a cover of J Mascis's "Get Me" for it, and Rosenfield and Lindsay Burdge covered Beat Happening's "Indian Summer".
