Plot summary
At the Catholic boarding school St. Mark's, a student named Elizabeth is attacked on the third floor by unseen forces. Father Drake tries to save her, proves powerless, and she vanishes. The school closes and reopens five years later under the headmistress Miss Pearce, who rules with an iron fist while Father Drake, now a drunkard, teaches. Five unwanted girls are left there by their families: Alex, Mara, the blind Cecilia, Leah and Connie. The third floor is forbidden. Cecilia and Mara go up anyway, Alex takes the punishment, and Alex begins having visions of Elizabeth. Strange events reveal that all five girls carry gifts: Connie draws spirit activity, Leah can pass through objects, Cecilia has second sight, Mara heals wounds and Alex moves things with her mind.
