Plot summary
Ritchie Flynn Parker, a Los Angeles health inspector, has just lost his job and broken up with his girlfriend Maggie. He learns his father Nat, a small-time con man, is in Atlantic City with a brain tumor and wants to see him. Ritchie thinks it is another trick but goes anyway. Nat shows him a picture of his own skull and asks to be driven to New Mexico for a cure. Nat lives on five dollars a day, entering radio contests under fake names for tickets he resells, and the two travel in a Sweet'n Low car given free if they buy gas at Chevron. Richie telephones Maggie on one of Nat's free promotional phones. Their first meal comes free at an IHOP, where Nat uses a fake license to claim a birthday.
