- Robert Bramkamp was pragmatic about getting Art Girls into cinemas: media art, he said, holds more freedom than the filmic-literary narratives possible in Germany, so he claimed to be making a film about three women artists in order to reimport parts of that media art.
- Neue Natur – Art Girls intern is a 70-minute docu-fiction mockumentary made for Arte; its documentary part grew out of Phantastischer Alltag in the Kunsthalle Göppingen, at once film set, students' experimental field, exhibition venue and scene of a staged catastrophe. A civil-protection exercise with the German Red Cross, the Technisches Hilfswerk and the Göppingen fire brigade was opened up artistically.
- In Art Girls the art director Susanne Weirich not only shaped the film's look, she also curated the contribution of fine art: the artworks of the artist Nikita Neufeld come mainly from Weirich herself, among them Silent Playground, Trostspender and Angels in Chains, supplemented by re-enacted videos by Andrea Fraser and Sam Taylor-Wood.
