Plot summary
New York City is in the middle of a summer heat wave, and ten characters are linked by a chain of sexual encounters that passes from one to the next. Julie, a virgin, asks Adam, an anthropology professor she once studied with, to sleep with her at a loft. Adam then visits Erika, a tarot reader, for help with the insecurities and superstitions he has about sex; she performs a ritual meant to cleanse him of sexual needs. Erika has trysts each week in a Harlem apartment with Diego, a bicycle messenger much younger than she is. Diego tells her he is in love with someone else, and she coaches him on courting that woman.
