Plot summary
By 2067, climate change, deforestation, and nuclear war have left Earth in ruins. One city in Australia survives by using synthetic oxygen, but that oxygen causes a deadly illness known as the Sickness. Ethan Whyte looks after his wife Xanthe, who is sick with it. Regina Jackson, the Chronicorp CTO, tells Ethan that a prototype time machine has received a radio signal from four hundred years in the future, asking that he be sent there. Ethan refuses, because he resents his late father Richard, who worked on the machine and abandoned the family. Xanthe and Ethan's guardian Jude persuade him to change his mind. Ethan travels into the future, hoping to prevent humanity's extinction.
