Plot summary
In Hemingford Home, Nebraska, in 1922, Wilfred James works farmland that has belonged to his family for generations. His wife Arlette comes into land her father left her, and she wants the couple to sell to a livestock company and relocate to Omaha. Wilf refuses to go. Arlette decides to divorce him and keep their fourteen-year-old son, Henry, with her. Henry has his own reason to stay: he is in love with Shannon Cotterie, the girl from the neighboring farm. Wilf proposes that he and Henry kill Arlette, and Henry, unwilling to leave Shannon and the land behind, reluctantly agrees.
