Plot summary
World War I is at its height, and in a small Texas town Liberty Bonds are sold, German immigrants fall under suspicion, and young men enlist. Horace Robedaux feels the same pull but does not want to leave his wife Elizabeth and their young child Jenny. Elizabeth's younger brother Brother Vaughn, who talks constantly about the fighting and imagines glory in France, pushes the matter. Her stern father, who opposed the marriage at first, decides he will look after Elizabeth and the child so Horace can serve, and take Brother along. At the same time, influenza is spreading through the town and the country, and many neighbors are falling ill.
