Plot summary
Cameron James arrives at Padua High, in the Seattle area, and falls for Bianca Stratford, a popular sophomore. Michael Eckman warns him that Bianca is conceited and that her single father Walter, who works as an obstetrician, has barred her and Kat, a senior, from dating until they graduate. Weary of Bianca's pleading and Kat's defiance, Walter rules that Bianca may go out only when Kat does. Bianca tells Cameron this and says he should find someone willing to date Kat. Michael persuades Joey Donner, an affluent senior, to pay Patrick Verona, a bad boy with a strange reputation, to ask Kat out. Patrick agrees, Kat turns down his first attempts, and Cameron and Michael gather details of her tastes from Bianca.

- Kate Hudson was offered the part but her mother, Goldie Hawn, did not like the script, so she passed on the role; casting director Marcia Ross then recommended Julia Stiles to Junger, who met her that evening, was "immediately taken" and gave her the role after a ten-minute meeting.
- Casting for Patrick Verona was a long process, with Andrew Lazar reporting he had seen over 1,000 boys for the role; three and a half weeks before filming was due to start, Ross brought Heath Ledger into a casting session and Junger was immediately inspired by him.
- Ledger's singing scene in the high-school bleachers, regarded as one of the most iconic scenes of the movie, took just three takes, and the song was nearly "I Touch Myself" by the Australian rock band Divinyls before "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" by Frankie Valli was settled on.
- In 2024, during the Drake-Kendrick Lamar feud, Drake responded to Lamar's diss track "Euphoria" by sharing a clip of the movie on Instagram showing Stiles reading the titular poem.
