Plot summary
Nadya teaches biology and has long considered herself plain. On vacation at her uncle and aunt's village house she is expected to find a husband, and her relatives give her an edge by letting it be known that she is a wealthy widow expecting a large inheritance. Three men begin courting her: Vladimir, a journalist who hopes a story about a millionaire's widow hiding in the countryside will win him a post in Moscow; Timofey, an artist who sees worldwide fame in a rich marriage; and Kulikov, a middle-aged womanizer who needs money for house repairs. Each has his own plan for the money, and each finds her dull.
