Plot summary
Kai, a young peregrine falcon, lives with his father Tendai at a remote outpost in the Katungu grassland, restless and forbidden from crossing the Katungu Boundary. A saddle-billed stork named Gogo and her weaver bird companion Tini crash land at the nest with newly hatched ducklings, and their talk of Zambezia, a bird city downriver, gives Kai a reason to leave. Zambezia is a giant baobab at the edge of Victoria Falls, where birds from everywhere prepare for the annual Spring Celebrations. A nightjar called Ezee shows Kai around, and he meets Zoe, a kite and the adopted daughter of Sekhuru, the city's founder. Kai damages her Spring Celebration decorations, then earns a place training with the Hurricanes, the defense patrol led by Ajax.
