Plot summary
In Zhili, a textile town in Zhejiang province's Huzhou City, more than 18,000 privately run workshops turn out children's clothes, most of them for buyers at home and some for export. Roughly 300,000 migrant workers fill them, arriving from rural provinces such as Yunnan, Guizhou, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan and Jiangsu. The workers are in their twenties and thirties. Their homes can lie over 2,000 kilometers away, so they sleep upstairs in dormitories, and the dialects around them come from different regions. They labor with the aim of having children one day, buying a house or opening a business, while friendships and romances form and dissolve and the pressures of distance, money and family weigh on them.

- Wang Bing moved to a town near Zhili and lived there for several years to make the film. After a hard first three months he won over local business managers, who let him shoot as long as the production did not disturb their businesses.
- The crew on Wang Bing's film was six people, with three cameras rolling at the same time, a setup chosen to cover the size of the town of Zhili and the large number of workers the film follows.
